Why I Teach

I teach because I am eager to guide students into their future professions and hone their knowledge about communication disorders and family-centered practices. My teaching philosophy includes ten principles for creating rich learning environments:

  1. Fostering interdisciplinary, collaborative group learning

  2. Establishing flexible routines, mixed with different forms of content delivery

  3. Relating content to real-life applications and students’ previous experiences

  4. Adjusting the teaching style to meet the needs of different learners

  5. Encouraging student participation, active learning, and student autonomy

  6. Fairly assessing students’ learning throughout the course, including providing helpful feedback and giving opportunities for one-to-one help

  7. Designing an organized course, in which expectations are openly communicated to students and time is managed well

  8. Demonstrating enthusiasm for the content, students, and the act of teaching

  9. Using an evidence-based approach to teaching

  10. Challenging students with higher-order learning tasks
